Januvia Diabetes Medication – Pancreatic Cancer

Victor Lewin - Tuesday, September 12, 2017

Januvia (sitagliptin), is a medication used to treat diabetes by controlling blood-sugar levels. The medication creates more insulin by reacting with the pancreas to produce more than the regular natural amount produced. Januvia effectively increases certain hormones to force the pancreas to produce more insulin. The medication is manufactured by Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp., which is a subsidiary of the pharmaceutical giant, Merck & Co., Inc. The medication is available by prescription in Canada.

Recent studies have determined that Januvia may actually over stimulate the pancreas, causing difficulties including pancreatitis, inflammation and in some cases, pancreatic cancer,

The concerns with Januvia and development of pancreatic cancer have been known for years. While no causal link has yet to be firmly established, there is a body of evidence to support the risk of developing the cancer when using Januvia. If Januvia has been used on a long-term basis, it can lead to inflammation of the pancreas, also known as pancreatitis. The development of pancreatic cancer can be caused by lengthy treatment and the development of pancreatitis.

In the United States, the Food & Drug Administration issued a safety notice about Januvia in March 2013 as a result of two studies that were published. In one study, the authours noted that the risk of pancreatitis approximately doubled in patients who used Januvia. In the second study, patients who had taken Januvia for one year or longer, pre-cancerous growth in the pancreas was observed. The FDA has issued warnings as nearly 100 cases of serious and life-threatening pancreatitis have been noted in patients using Januvia for a prolonged length of time.

Wagners is currently investigating the harm and effects associated with Januvia to determine if a class action lawsuit should be filed against the makers of the drug, Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp.

If you or a loved one have been prescribed Januvia to treat diabetes and have suffered harm or have developed pancreatitis or pancreatic cancer, please contact the lawyers at Wagners to discuss your situation.
