Nova Scotia vehicle owners will have likely received a recall notice at one time or another. Auto manufacturers send out these types of announcements, which are also known as a Notice of Safety Defect, when a defect that could compromise safety has been identified in one of their vehicles. The Motor Vehicle Safety Act requires that this notice include a description of the problem, the potential safety consequences of leaving the defect unrepaired and the steps that vehicle owners can take to have the issue remedied. Repairs are usually performed without charge by authorized dealers.

As record-breaking recalls from vehicle manufacturing giants, such as General Motors, Nissan and Toyota, have dominated headlines and affected consumers in Nova Scotia and across Canada, Mercedes-Benz noted a possible safety hazard in some of their vehicles as well. Recalls are on pace to set records in 2014. Approximately 13 million vehicles have been recalled this year. A previous high was set in 2004 when more than 30 million vehicles were affected by recalls.

Toyota Canada Recalls More Than 500,000 Cars

Some owners of Toyota vehicles in Nova Scotia could soon find themselves affected by the company's recently announced recall. Toyota Canada has announced that 513,401 cars spanning a variety of models will be recalled due to potential problems with their seat rails, steering columns and engine starters, among other issues. One of the models involved is a General Motors Corp. Pontiac Vibe, which was built at a factory in California that GM shares with Toyota.

National Class Certified in Nova Scotia in Wright Hip Implant Case

On March 7, 2014, the Honourable Justice Michael Wood released his decision which certified the proposed class action on behalf of Canadian residents who received a Wright Medical Profemur Hip Implant after February, 2001 and suffered a fracture of a component of that system. The certification motion was heard before Justice Wood on August 15, 2013. Wagners filed the class action on September 13, 2011.

Improperly Sterilized Equipment May Have Infected Patients

It was revealed that officials of a New Brunswick health authority discussed the use of improperly sterilized biopsy forceps at its facilities for three months without taking action. They finally released information regarding the instances of potential medical malpractice and advised patients who may have been exposed to the improperly sterilized equipment to undergo testing for HIV and hepatitis B and C. Documents showed that Horizon Health Network staff spent weeks attempting to figure out how much risk patients had actually faced at the Miramichi Regional Hospital over the 14 years that the forceps were improperly sterilized.
