Estate of woman who died in hospital files suit

Nova Scotia residents may be interested to hear about the progress of a lawsuit following the death of a woman at a hospital. The woman's estate said that the hospital's negligence resulted in her death after she consumed hand sanitizer that was made available throughout the facility. The suit states that the hospital was aware of the problem of people entering the hospital to consume hand sanitizer but did not take sufficient measures to prevent it, nor did they treat the woman after she had consumed the product.

Nova Scotia patients may have heard that, when an elderly woman fell down a long flight of stairs and slipped into a coma in November 2010, doctors' prognosis was not good. She suffered numerous brain hemorrhages, for which doctors declined to operate. She woke from her coma within a few days, but she then suffered a cardiac arrest that caused further brain damage. She was given an emergency tracheostomy and a stomach feeding tube to keep her alive, and doctors warned that she would not survive the ordeal.

In a case that might concern Nova Scotia patients, a deceased woman's family is suing a hospital after she died from an infection the day after she was discharged from the facility. The medical malpractice suit names the Montreal hospital and four doctors as having been negligent, though none of the doctors had a negative disciplinary record.
